THIS WEEK: The University of Utah ski team will resume competition at the Montana State Invitational this week with the cross country events on Wed. and Thurs. The Utes currently hold a four point lead at the invite after a top-notch performance by the alpine team last weekend.
PREVIEW: The Utes cross country success banks on the return of five-returning men's skiers and a women's team headlined by two returning skiers and five highly talented newcomers. Senior Petter Svendsen provides the men's team with leadership. Zac Simons and Ryan Quinn provided consistent results for the Utes last season. Torin Koos is an Olympic hopeful who has been skiing for the U.S. Ski Team.
The women's team is led by senior Gretchen Domek and junior Maria Lundamo. Norway's Sara Svendsen and Jorunn Oye are expected to be key role players for the Utes. Jaana Kettunen and Jana Suchtova are hoping to make an impact in their debut season at Utah. Anna Sprague, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, has unlimited potential as a ski racer, according to coach Kevin Sweeney.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The alpine team gave Utah a four-point lead over Denver. Petra Svet took first place in the women's giant slalom, while Pierre Olsson placed first in the men's slalom and added a second place finish in the giant slalom.
Annik Boulva and April Mancuso placed third and fifth, respectively, in the slalom. Freshman Madaileine Sparks-Krebbs finished in a tie for sixth place in the GS. Defending NCAA slalom champion, Jernej Bukovec tied for fourth in the slalom, while Scott Woodland and Josh Whitham captured seventh and eighth in the GS.
UTE NOTES: Olympic hopeful, Torin Koos, recently participated in the World Cup competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. As the only American racing, he finished 20th in the freestyle sprint race. In November, Koos won the Continental Cup competition held in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Utes are looking for big results from Koos this season.
