SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah swimming and diving program has signed sixteen men and women to national letters of intent. The announcement came today from Head Swimming and Diving Coach Mike Litzinger. Six of the signees were high school All-Americans, while three others earned honorable mention All-America recognition.
Swimmers Evan Castro, Renee Dyer, Phoenix Fribourg, Jon Hanna, Brett Hoersting and Cody Rempfer were 2000-01 prep All-Americans. Strokers Robert Caputo, Renee Dyer and David Johnson, a graduate of Skyline High School, were honorable mention high school All-Americans.
In addition to Johnson, the Utes signed two other Salt Lake City natives in swimmer Bryn Evans of Brighton High School and diver Kerri Fiori of Cottonwood High School. Swimmers Sara Afong, Jacob Burton, Tessa Greegor, Katherine Hathaway, Loren Sweny and Melissa Young round out the recruiting class.
"I am extremely pleased to have these young men and women make the University of Utah their choice to continue swimming on the NCAA level," said Litzinger. "All of them are not only athletes that will help establish Utah as a contender in the MWC, but are the type of people we can be proud of away from the pool, and in the classroom."
Jacob Burton (6-1, Bend, Ore.): 2001 Oregon state high school champion in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay ... member of the Bend Swim Club.
Robert Caputo (5-7, Roseville, Calif.): Honorable mention All-American in the 500 free at Roseville High School ... member of the Sierra Marlins Swim Team.
Evan Castro (5-10, Redlands, Calif.): All-American in the 100 breast and 200 medley relay at Redlands High School ... also participated on the Redlands Swim Team.
Jon Hanna (5-11, Corona, Calif.): All-American at Los Alamitos High School in the 200 free and 500 free ... participated on the Industry Hills Swim Team.
Brett Hoersting (6-1, Union, Ky.): Received All-America honors and was the Kentucky state prep champion in the 100 and 200 free ... attended Covington Catholic High School.
David Johnson (6-0, Salt Lake City): Honorable mention All-American and 2001 Utah high school state champion in the 100 back and 200 free ... attended Skyline High School ... also a member of the Eagles Aquatic Team.
Cody Rempfer (6-0, Lodi, Calif.): All-American in the 100 fly, 100 breast and 200 free relay at Lodi High School ... 2000 U.S. Junior National finalist in the 200 fly ... member of the Tiger Aquatics Club.
Sara Afong (5-5, Boise, Idaho): Hawaii state high school champion in the 200 free and 500 free in both 1998 and `99 before moving to Idaho ... graduated from Capital High School in Boise ... YMCA national qualifier in 2001.
Renee Dyer (5-7, Rocklin, Calif.): First team All-American in the 200 free and an honorable mention All-American in the 100 breast in 2000 ... attended Rocklin High School and in 2000 ... member of the Sierra Marlins Swim Team.
Bryn Evans (5-9, Salt Lake City): 2001 Utah state high school champion in the 100 breast ... attended Brighton High School ... member of the Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Team.
Kerri Fiori (5-1, Salt Lake City): 2001 Utah state high school champion in the one- and three-meter events ... Region V champion in the one- and three-meter events ... attended Cottonwood High School ... member of the SLAP Diving Team.
Phoenix Fribourg (5-11, San Antonio, Texas): In 2000 was named a first team All-American in the 100 breast ... 1998 U.S. Junior National champion in the 400 medley relay and also a finalist in the 100 breast ... attended Sandra Day O'Conner High School ... member of the Alamo Area Swim Team.
Tessa Greegor (5-9, Boise, Idaho): 1999 and 2000 Idaho state high school champion in the 100 breast ... holds the Idaho state record in the 100 breast ... attended Timberline High School ... 2001 YMCA national qualifier.
Katherine Hathaway (5-6, Seattle, Wash.): 2000 Washington state high school qualifier in the 200 free and 500 free ... attended Roosevelt High School ... member of the Salmon Bay Aquatics Team.
Loren Sweny (5-9, Manotick, Canada): Canadian national qualifier in the 200 and 400 free and the 200 back ... placed second in the 200 free at the 2001 Canadian Junior Nationals ... attended John McCrae High School.
Melissa Young (5-8, Gresham, Ore.): Named Gresham High School's Most Valuable Swimmer 1998-2001 ... also attended Portland Lutheran ... member of the David Douglas Swim Club.
