SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - The University of Utah ski team recently held their awards ceremony and luncheon. The Utes capped off the 2001 season with a fourth place finish at the NCAA championships, which included two Utes being crowned as national champions. Their success included four skiers being given All-America First Team honors, and five being named to All-America Second Team.
Pat Casey received the Utes' Alf Engen Sportsmanship Award, which is given annually to the junior or senior who best demonstrated inspirational qualities on the team. It takes into consideration outstanding competitive achievement as well as noteworthy leadership and sportsmanship.
Casey was also given the C.D. Reddish Memorial Award given to the graduating senior or upper classman who has contributed the most to the team, including results, community relations, and promoting the sport as a diplomatic ambassador.
The David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award was given to Jernej Bukovec. It is awarded to the male athlete who has been one of the most influential factors to the success of the team, with outstanding results throughout the season.
Petra Svet was given the Toril Forland Outstanding Skier Award, which is awarded to the female athlete who has been an important facto to the success and accomplishments of the Women's Ski Team.
The Bud Jack Scholarship Award for Academics was given to Sabrina Lawrence, who earned a 4.0 grade point average and was one of eight Utah Academic All-Americans.
