Salt Lake City - The No. 17 ranked University of Utah women's basketball team shut-down the UNLV Rebels, 74-43, posting a seventh consecutive 20-win season on Sat., Feb. 10, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes improve to 20-2 overall, 9-0 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV falls to 14-7 overall, 4-5 in MWC play.
Lauren Beckman led the Ute attack, almost posting a double-double (nine points, 12 boards) in the first half, as Utah went into the break leading, 39-16. The Utes scored 30 points off the bench, 28 points in the paint, 17 second-chance points and 25 points off turnovers. Utah out-rebounded the Rebels, 46-43 in a very physical match-up. The Utes recorded 20 assists, 11 steals and four blocks in the game.
For the Utes, Beckman recorded a career-high 16 blocks and 19 points. She went 4-of-12 from the field and had a season-high 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Beckman posted five assists, two blocks and one steal with no turnovers in the game. Teammate Lori Red-Castagnetto recorded a season-high 16 points, making 7-of-12 from the field and 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Senior Kristina Andersen added 11 points, respectively. Utah went 25-of-62 (40 percent) from the field, 5-of-14 (36 percent) from three-point range and 76 percent (19-of-25) from the free-throw line.
For the Rebels, Linda Frohlich scored 23 points and 14 rebounds. She went 9-of-21 from the field, 1-of-4 from 3-point range and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line. UNLV shot 28 percent from the field (17-of-61), 26 percent from behind the arc (5-of-19) and 40 percent from the free-throw line (4-of-10).
"I am happy with our team's consistency in which they come to play," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "They (Utah) know they've got to put away these teams to win a championship, and that is when they play their best games. I am really pleased with Lauren (Beckman), she is playing with a lot of fire and intensity, and was truly a force on the boards tonight. Lori (Red-Castagnetto) is key for us right now with her consistency at the offensive end of the floor." said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: On Thurs., Feb. 15, the Utes travel to Laramie, Wyo., to face the Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. Utah will meet Colorado State on Sat., Feb. 17 in Fort Collins, Colo., at 2:00 p.m. On Fri., Feb. 23, Utah will travel to Provo, Utah to take on the Cougars of Brigham Young at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back at home on Thurs., Mar. 1, when they face the Air Force Falcons at 7:00 p.m. Utah hosts New Mexico in its final regular-season game on Sat., Mar. 3, at 3:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah will vie for its second-straight MWC tournament championship on Mar. 7-10, in Las Vegas, Nev.
