San Francisco, Calif. - The University of Utah women's basketball team lost to the University of San Francisco, 65-56, on the road on Sun., Dec. 30. The Utes move to 7-5 overall. San Francisco improves to 6-5 on the season.
The game was very physical and frustrating for Utah. The Utes led at the half, 35-32 and after the break, the score flip-flopped until the Lady Dons secured a nine point lead with 20 seconds to go in the game. A series of 'no calls' throughout the second half hindered the Utes chances of getting back within reach and the Lady Dons went on to win the game.
On the night, senior Lauren Beckman racked up another double-double, with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and four total blocks. Beckman went 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Lindsay Herbert also scored in double-figures for the Utes. Herbert totaled 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc and 3-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Caroline Matthews notched seven points and eight rebounds and teammate Erin Gibbons added seven points and five assists on the night. Utah unloaded its bench with all eleven players seeing time in the game. As a team, the Utes went 18-of-43 from the field, 4-of-11 from three-point range and 16-of-23 from the free-throw line.
Toni Russell, Leeane Jensen and Alicia Hernandez combined for 35 of San Francisco's 65 points in the game. Russell had 14 points, Jensen scored 11 and Hernandez posted 10 points. Teammate Berger led the team with seven rebounds. The Lady Dons shot 45 percent (23-of-51) from the field, 36 percent (5-of-14) from the behind the arc and 67 percent (14-of-21) from the free-throw line. SFU edged the Utes on the boards, 33-30.
