THIS WEEK: The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams open the 2001-02 season at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational, Friday through Saturday in Fort Collins, Colo. Start times are 5:00 p.m. (MDT) on Friday and 9:00 a.m. (MDT) on Saturday.
ALUMNI MEET RECAP: Utah held the first ever Crimson and White Alumni Meet on Oct. 6 in the Ute Natatorium. The alumni team beat the varsity team, 126-115, with a modified scoring system used.
The varsity women's team put on an impressive early season display with sophomore returner Neringa Statkevicuite winning the 50 and 100 free events. Tri-captain Amber Nye won the 50 back. Evan Castro, a freshman, took top honors in the 50 breast and the 200 free events for the men. Daniel Godfrey won the 100 IM.
The alumni team was made up of 27 former Utah swimmers, including NCAA All-Americans Shawn Rowland and Tom Eiche.
QUOTING LITZINGER: "We are excited to open the 2001-02 season. This is always a good event to start with since we get the chance to compete against other Mountain West teams. This gives us an idea of what to expect from the early part of our dual meets."
