SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by the Wyoming Cowboys in conference competition earlier this evening. Despite unfavorable team results, the Utes produced several outstanding individual performances.
Final team scores in the men's competition were 138.50-102.50, resulting in a 0-4 season and conference record. Junior Stephen Linge, won the 50 free (22.16) and 200 back (1:57.30) events, a personal best for Linge. Freshman Travis Schimmer was first in the 200 breast (2:12.00). Diver Sterling Richards dominated the competition winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
The women's competition was tight, with a final score of 122-115. Utah women's record now stands at 1-5 for the season and 0-4 in the conference. The loss came despite eight first-place finishes in 13 events. The star of the evening was sophomore Kimberly Lewis. Lewis won the 200 IM (2:10.99) and 200 back (2:10.92).
"Kim's swimming was unbelievable. This is an amazing achievement for her," stated Coach Litzinger.
Other notable performances belonged to Heidi Hausknecht, Sarah Norton and Jill Comins. Hausknecht won the 100 free (51.91) and 200 free (1:54.51). Norton claimed the 50 free (24.16) and Comins won the 1-meter event in the diving competition.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow in the Ute Natatorium, where they will take on the Air Force Falcons at 1:00 p.m.
