SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2000 NCAA runner-up University of Utah gymnastics team has received a letter of intent from a member of Canada's Senior International Team. Veronique Leclerc, Canada's Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 and the 1997-98 Canadian uneven bars champion, will join three other freshmen at the U. next year. Utah signed United States Junior Olympians Tacia LaBatte (Kaneohe, Hawaii), Annie Medcalf (Stow, Ohio) and Melissa Vituj (Ada, Mich.) during the early
signing period in November.
Leclerc, from St.-Hubert, Quebec, won the silver medal on bars for Canada's bronze medal team at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. She was seventh all-around at the 1999 International Gymnastics competition in Montreal. Leclerc placed 28th in the all-around at the 1997 World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
She competes for the club team Gym-Richelieu and is coached by Michel Charron.
