Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 67-59 on Thurs., Mar. 2, in Salt Lake City. Utah improves to 19-7 overall, 10-3 in the MWC. New Mexico drops to 18-8 overall, 9-4 in the MWC.
A tight 51-50 Utah lead with 4:55 left to go in the ball-game made the Utes look to junior Kristina Andersen and sophomore Erin Gibbons for points. Andersen hit three buckets in a row putting Utah up 57-50 with 3:14 left in the game. Erin Gibbons put the game on ice, hitting two 3-pointers, a 63-51 Utah advantage.
Gibbons and Andersen combined for 27 of the Utes 67 points. Gibbons racked up 14 points, hitting 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Andersen had 13 points and seven rebounds. She made 4-of-8 from the field and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Lauren Beckman totaled eight points and six boards. Sophomore Katherine McColl led the team with eight boards, while senior Tiana Fuertes totaled eight assists. Utah used the depth of its bench as 12 Ute players saw action. As a team, Utah shot 39 percent from the field (22-of-57), 33 percent from behind the arc (7-of-21) and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free-throw line.
For the Lobos, Nikki Heckroth led the team with 11 points, making 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Teammates Jordan Adams and Sonya Bryant had nine points each. Molly McKinnon led New Mexico on the boards, recording eight rebounds. The Lobos shot 33 percent from the field (20-of-61), 27 percent from the 3-point line (7-of-26) and 48 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-25).
"The difference tonight was that Kristina (Andersen) and Erin (Gibbons) hit the shots that we needed down the stretch. They got some good looks and had open shots and hit them. We got tentative at times and that made us a little less confident to step up and shoot. That is when we have to continue to attack at the basket. We were tougher in this game than when we played them before and we hit a few more shots," said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: Utah will play Air Force on Sat., Mar. 4 at home at 3:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes will compete for the inaugural MWC championship Wed.-Sat., Mar. 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nev. Game times are TBA.
