TEMPE, Ariz. -
The University of Utah gymnastics team made the worst out of a bad draw in a quadrangular meet at Arizona State and the result was a rare last place finish for the Utes on Friday. Arizona State won the meet with a 195.850, followed by Alabama (195.300), Minnesota (195.150) and Utah (194.675).
Not since 1979 had Utah finished last in a multi-team meet. And, with four losses now on the season (5-4 overall), Utah also has more losses than 1979, when it finished 14-5.
The day started off with a bad draw, when Utah was assigned to open competition on the balance beam. Known as the event that decides meets, Utah knew its fate early after its first two competitors fell and a third fell later in the lineup.
And though the Utes went on to win floor (49.10) and bars (49.475), the meet was essentially over at the start. Ute head coach Greg Marsden was upset with more than Utah's beam performance, however.
"This was a coach's nightmare, coming off a big emotional win on Monday (over UCLA) and then coming in here flat. You can't come in flat against this caliber field and expect to feel good about yourselves."
Marsden said his team didn't respond to the challenge of a comeback until its final event. "We really didn't get going until bars, our last event. We improved a little by the time floor came around, but we had no performance quality. We were just going through the motions. As for beam, we looked like deer in the headlights. I am very disappointed, especially at this juncture, that we performed so poorly on beam."
In a night of disappointments, senior Denise Jones again shined. Jones finished second in the all-around with a 39.150. Jenny Schmidt was Utah's sole event winner, tying her career high with a 9.95.
