Utes Pull Out A 56-52 Win Over UNLV

Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team rolled in Mountain West Conference play with a 56-52 win over UNLV, at the Jon M. Hunstman Center on Sat., Feb. 12. Utah is currently 17-5 overall, 8-1 in the MWC. UNLV drops to 11-11 overall, 3-6 in the MWC.
Erin Gibbons led the Utes with 10 points in 11 minutes of play. Gibbons shot 4-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Junior Amy Ewert, sophomore Lauren Beckman and freshman Carley Marshall each added nine points in the game. Kristina Andersen and Beckman each had nine boards and senior Tiana Fuertes totaled five assists and three steals. As a team, Utah shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-54), 20 percent from three-point range (3-of-15) and 54 percent (7-of-13) from the free-throw line. Eleven players saw time and all but two scored points in the game.
For the Rebels, Constance Jinks came off the bench to score 16 points. Jinks was 7-of-15 from the field and totaled eight rebounds. Linda Frohlich added 14 points and led the team with nine rebounds. UNLV shot 33 percent from the field (21-of-64), just 17 percent from behind the 3-point line (2-of-12) and 57 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-14).
"They've got some excellent individual talent on the floor. My main concern was that we didn't seem to have the energy that we need to have and we looked a little lethargic. Again, we had a lot of kids step up offensively and down the stretch, Erin Gibbons hit a clutch 3-pointer for us. I'm pleased that we played strong and didn't let up near the end of the game and that we pulled out this win," said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: Utah hits the road on Thurs., Feb. 17 to take on the Cowgirls of Wyoming at 7:00 p.m. (MST). On Sat., Feb. 19, the Utes will play at Colorado State at 2:00 p.m. (MST). Utah hosts in-state rival Brigham Young on Sat., Feb. 26 at 3:00 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah will play New Mexico on Thurs., Mar. 2 at home at 7:00 p.m. (MST) and Air Force on Sat., Mar. 4 at home at 3:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes will compete for the inaugural MWC championship Wed.-Sat., Mar. 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nev. Game times are TBA.
