COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.- The Utes opened the 2000-01 season at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational. The Utes faced eleven teams, including three from the Mountain West Conference.
On the women's side, Utah captured fourth place with 480.50 points. The host team, Colorado State, swam to a first-place position with a final score of 875.50, followed by Fresno State and Wyoming.
For the men, Air Force excelled with a final score of 1,078.50 points and a first-place finish. Utah made a statement by finishing third with a final score of 692.50 points, preceded by second-place Wyoming.
Freshman Kristen Kaiser proved that she is going to be a force to reckon with this season. Kaiser took top honors in the 400 IM and 1650 free, and also had a second place finish in the 500 free. Team captain Erin Blundell placed second in the 200 free and third in the 200 fly.
Sophomore David Fleisch won the 200 IM and placed third in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200 back. Diver Sterling Richards flipped to a second-place finish in the one and three-meter competitions. Stephen Linge grabbed a second-place finish in the 100 fly and placed third in the 200 IM.
