Utes Win Conference Opener

San Diego, Calif. - The University of Utah women?s basketball team opened up Mountain West Conference play with a 53-44 win over San Diego State, in San Diego, Calif. on Thurs., Jan 13. Utah is currently 10-4 overall, 1-0 in the MWC. San Diego State drops to 4-9 overall, 0-1 in the MWC.
Junior Amy Ewert led Utah with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Ewert was 6-of-9 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Teammate Kristina Andersen posted 12 points, making 4-of-8 from the field and an impressive 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. Sophomore Lindsay Herbert added five points and Lori Red totaled four assists in the game. Utah racked up six blocks and 11 steals in the match-up. Ten Utah players saw action, with all but one posting points in the game. As a team, Utah shot 42 percent from the field (18-of-43), 39 percent from behind the arc (5-of-13) and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line.
For the Aztecs, Mary Apiafi led the team with 13 points, seven boards and three steals. Jamey Cox totaled 11 points and three assists. Atim Otii added eight points and Kacee Wheeler had seven points. San Diego State shot 32 percent from the field (15-of-47), just 18 percent from the 3-point line (2-of-11) and 67 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-18).
?It was a bit of a struggle tonight and the bottom line is that we?re going to have to play scrappy and it?s going to be this way because we are not an overpowering team. Our kids have to be up for the battle that it is going to be for the next two months. We have to stay focused to the idea that they?ve got to come ready to battle and that was really what this was, a very physical game,? said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: Utah travels to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on the Rebels of UNLV on Sat., Jan. 15 at 7:35 p.m. (PST). Utah is back in action at home when they take on MWC opponent Wyoming, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m. (MST). On Sat., Jan. 22, Utah hosts Colorado State at 3:35 p.m. (MST). On Fri., Jan. 28, the Utes travel to Provo, Utah to take on in-state rival BYU at 7:00 p.m. (MST). Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to face the Lobos of New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. (MST). On Sat., Feb. 5, the Utes take on Air Force at 2:00 p.m. (MST) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
