Utes Host BYU
The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams end their dual meet schedule in a competition versus in-state rival Brigham Young. The meet is scheduled for Sat., Feb. 6 at 1:00 p.m. in Ute Natatorium. The Brigham Young men's team is 8-1 and the women are 7-1. Earlier this season, the Utes were defeated by the Cougars in Provo. The men fell 158-79 and the women lost 179-64.
Utes to Watch
The Utah women's relays continue to dominate the water. Against Wyoming, Utah stole the first, second and third place spots in the 200 medley and placed first and second in the 400 medley relay versus Air Force. Utah's 400 medley team of Amber Nye, Nicole Lindburg, Annika Lundmark and Callie Robinson set a new school record with a time of 3:42.49 versus Washington (Jan. 22). So far this season, the Utes have won 12 relays and recorded seven second-place finishes. Senior Molly Lauber, who set a Utah record in the 100 breast with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:03.13 (Minnesota Invitational), won the 100 breast and was second in the 200 breast versus Wyoming. She has logged five first-place finishes this season and has placed second six times. Junior Heidi Hausknecht won four events versus Air Force and Wyoming. She won the 100 free against both schools, won the 100 fly against Wyoming and won the 50 free versus Air Force. Hausknecht leads the Utes in the 100 free and 100 fly. She has won nine events this season and was second four times. Junior Heike Kutz, who broke her own 100 back record (58.71) at the Minnesota Invite, won the 500 free versus Air Force. Sophomore Erin Blundell won the 200 fly versus Air Force and Wyoming. She also won the 200 free against the Falcons and the 500 free against the Cowgirls. She has won four events this season and has five second-place finishes.
The Utah men's distance freestyle squad controlled the lanes versus Wyoming and Air Force. Against the Falcons, freshman Travis Harmor won both the 1650 and 500 freestyle events. Junior Robert Renna was runner-up and Dan Schultz was third in the 1650 and 500, cementing the Ute victory across the board. Renna won both the 1000 and 500 free versus the Cowboys while Harmor finished second. The sprint duo of Johan Nystrom and Troy Johnson also had a big weekend. Nystrom added three wins to the Ute scoring column when he won the 200 and 100 freestyle events versus Wyoming. The junior also won the 200 free against Air Force. Johnson won the 50 free and was runner-up in the 100 against both the Cowboys and Air Force.
Last Week
The Utes swept Air Force and Wyoming. The Ute men shellacked the Cowboys 157-100, while the women trounced the Cowgirls 150-110. The Utah women's swimming and diving team defeated the Air Force Academy for the first time in Ute history with a 112-92 thrashing to up its season mark to 4-6. The Utah men's team squeaked by the Falcons 103-102 boosting its record to 6-3 .
