This Week: This weekend marks the beginning of a highly anticipated season for the Utes. Utah will travel to Bozeman, Mont., where they will be participating in the year's opening invitational hosted by Montana State University. The teams competing are Alaska-Anchorage, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico, Western College, Denver, Colorado, Montana State, Whitman and Utah. Colorado is the defending NCAA Champions and will be looking to defend their title, starting with the year's first races.
About the Utes: Utah is among the favorites to capture the national championship in 1999. The Utes are returning six all-American skiers from last year's national runners-ups team. Rune and Frode Kollerud are two skiers that will be looked to for team leadership and high finishes. For the last two seasons, they have been formidable weapons in the Utes arsenal. They have been All-American and all-conference their first two years and Rune was named best male skier in 1997 after which the award was given to Frode in 1998. For the women, Tina Kavcic and Sandra Kuehni will provide much needed leadership for the women's alpine team. Tina and Sandra received all-conference honors in OE98 and will be needed to perform well on an alpine team that includes two freshman and a sophomore. There is a unique blend of experience and youth that the Utes believe will produce winning results.
