RUMFORD, Maine - Five men and five women were named Tuesday, Jan. 26, to race cross country at the 1999 World Nordic Ski Championships Feb. 18-28 in Ramsau, Austria. Two former skiers from the University of Utah Ski Team were selected to compete, and another current Ute to coach.
Marcus Nash, originally from Fryeburg, Maine, skied for the Utes from 1992-94. Nash was named all-American in 1993, the year he helped the Utes win the NCAA Championship. He was also honored at Utah by receiving the C.D. Reddish Memorial Award in 94.
Justin Wadsworth from Bend, Oregon, skied during the 1987 and'88 seasons for Utah. Wadsworth earned all-America honors in 1988. Before coming to Utah, Wadsworth skied with the U.S. Development, Junior Olympic and Nor Am Teams.
Former USSA and collegiate competitor Kevin Sweeney was the Ute selected to coach at the World Championships. Sweeney has led the University of Utah Cross Country Team since 1991, and has coached seven NCAA Champions. The Colorado native graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1985.
The skiers and coaches selected will leave Feb. 1 for a training mini-camp in Europe and then the World Cup races Feb. 14 in Seefeld, Austria before moving on to Ramsau.
