ELDORA, Colo. - The University of Utah holds a narrow six point lead over host Colorado at the midway point of the 1998 NCAA West Ski Regional, which is also serving as the eighth annual Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial meet.
The top two ranked teams in the nation, the perennial western powers are continuing their season-long duel as the schools split the four meets heading into the regional. Thursday was no different, as Utah used a strong showing on the men's side in amassing 236 total points, while Colorado relied on their strong women's program in earning 230 points.
Utah skiers captured both the men's and women's individual titles in the cross country classic races, albeit it had some help on the women's side. CU senior Line Seines, who had won all eight races in the west coming in suffered a fall that resulted in ending her winning streak. Utah's Kristin Tjelle skied the 5- kilometer course in a 16:45 time, which proved to be good enough for a two second win over Seines in the race.
In the men's 10-kilometer race, Utah's Frode Kollerud won easily, as his 29:41 time bested CU senior Ove Erik Tronvoll's 30:13 effort by some 32 seconds. "I had a good race today, though I was a little confused at the beginning," Kollerud said. "I was behind after the first kilometer, but I still felt good and confident. It was a pretty good track. It's tough because you gave to pass on the outside, but the downhill part is good. (Friday) is going to be tough with the mass start, and it's hard to get going right away. But I feel good and have confidence."
Utah had three of the top eight finishers as Frode's brother Rune finished seventh and Hakon Skjonberg took eighth.
Other top finishers of the day were earned in the Men's Giant Slalom. Three more Ute skiers finished in the top seven including Ryan Forsyth at second, Alain Britt-Cote at fourth and Mike Elvidge at seventh.
