SUNDAY RIVER, Maine - At the halfway point of the NCAA Skiing Championships, the University of Utah Ski Team is in first place after a strong second day of events. The Utes are clinging to a two point lead over last years national champion, Colorado. Utah has totaled 348 points, Colorado has 346, and Vermont is in third place with 317 points.
In the women's 5K freestyle cross country race, Vermont's Ekaterina Ivanova took first place with a time of 15:17.9. All three Utes finished in the top twenty, led by Kristina Joder in 13th, Lene Pedersen in 15th and Hailey Wappett who was 17th.
Utah dominated the men's 10K freestyle cross country race. Rune Kollerud won the title finishing in 27:19.6 and was followed by his twin brother Frode Kollerud who took second, finishing seven seconds behind. Pat Casey was the Utes third finisher who took 20th.
Friday, Mar. 12, is the third day of competition and will feature the men's and women's slalom races. The fourth and final day of skiing is Saturday, Mar. 13, and will feature the men's and women's classic cross country races. The national championship will be awarded on Saturday, immediately following the races.
