The No. 3 ranked Utes made easy work of instate foe Southern Utah Friday, defeating the T-Birds 195.525-191.350 before 11,503 spectators in the Huntsman Center. It was Utah's fourth win without a loss. The real work might come next week when Head Coach Greg Marsden picks his lineup. Thank freshman Deidra Graham for that. Graham took full advantage of the absence of all-arounder Theresa Wolf, who sat out to rest some minor injuries. In Graham's first collegiate all-around, she edged teammate Denise Jones 39.10-39.00.
Graham opened the competition with her first collegiate vault to count and nailed a 9.775 handspring front pike. She finished tied for second with Angelika Schatton, who stuck a season-high 9.775. Ashley Kever then earned the first vault win of her career with a personal-best 9.800. The Utes opened up a commanding one-point lead after the first event, scoring a 48.80 to SUU's 47.70.
Graham continued to scorch on the bars, scoring a career-best 9.875. She set up Angie Leonard, who put in her double layout dismount for the first time of the year and was rewarded with a season-best 9.90. Leonard won the event, her first win of the season and the 17th bar win of her career. The real story on bars, though, might have been Jenny Schmidt, who scored a 9.775 in her first competitive routine since March 7, 1997. Schmidt, who has competed exhibition for Utah this year, is coming back from three knee surgeries in two years. Utah counted a low score of 9.70 on the bars and rolled up a 49.050 to take a 97.850-95.525 lead over the T-Birds.
For the first time of the year, Utah ran into some problems on beam, with Angie Leonard falling and Shannon Bowles bobbling on her mount. But, led by Theresa Kulikowski and junior Denise Jones, who tied for first with 9.80, the Utes still managed a respectable 48.700. It was Kulikowski's third win of the year on the beam.
With the meet well in hand going into the final rotation, the attention turned to the all-around race, where Jones and Graham were tied after three events, each with a 29.30. Take away a step out of bounds by Jones and they would have remained knotted after four. But, docked .10 for her step, Jones scored a 9.70 to Graham's 9.80. Kulikowski and Leonard tied for first on floor, each with a 9.825. It was Kulikowski's 10th victory of the year.
