QuicklyThe Utes travel to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Thurs.-Sat., March 5-7. The WAC Championships will feature teams from Air Force, Brigham Young, Hawai'i, UNLV, New Mexico, Rice, SMU, TCU, Utah and Wyoming. In 1997, the Utes placed fifth at the WAC Championships.
Ute NotesIn the regular season, the Ute men logged a 6-5-1 mark (4-2-1 WAC). Last year, Utah went 5-4. It is the most wins for Utah since 1995, when Tesch led the team to a 7-1 record and the WAC Championship.
WAC RankingsEntering WAC competition, Johan Nystrom is ranked fifth in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Robert Renna is eighth in the WAC rankings in the 1000 and 1650 free. Matt Chamberlain is sixth in the 200 fly, eighth in the 200 IM and 15th in the 100 fly. Mike Greene is fifth in the 100 and eighth in the 200 back. In diving, Nick Smith is second in the 3-meter and eighth in the 1-meter. Smith's 336.15 points in the 3-meter is an automatic qualifying score for the NCAA Tournament. Dustin Jones is fifth in the 1-meter and eighth in the 3-meter. Utah's 400 free relay is fourth and the 200 and 400 medley and 200 free relays are ranked fifth.

1998 Highlights: At the Speedo Cup, Mike Greene swam his lifetime best in the 100 back (50.99) earning an NCAA B stadard qualifying time in the event. He also swam lifetime bests in the 200 IM and 100 fly (50.01) He has won five events and was second in four. Greene holds Utah season records in the 100 and 200 back. 1997 WAC: Greene was 12th in the 200 and 17th in the 100 back at the WAC Championships. He was also a member of the fifth-place 200 and seventh-place 400 medley relay teams. Greene: "At Long Beach, watching the college swimmers at the Speedo Cup, all I could think was how fast they are. I was standing behind the blocks this year and thought, 'I'm swimming with these people, I guess I must have the potential to be as good.' This season I've focused on recognizing my potential, because once I've done that, I can set a goal and reach it (his potential)."

1998 Highlights: Robert Renna is ranked eighth in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle in the Western Athetic Conference. Against Brigham Young, he own the 1000 and 500 free and was 10th in the 1650 at the Speedo Cup. Renna won ten events and swam five second place finishes. He holds season records in both events. 1997 WAC: As a freshman, Renna placed fifth in the 1650 and 19th in the 500 free at the WAC Championships. Renna: "My focus this season is to contribute to the team, help bring our level of competition up a few notches. We have a great squad, both sprinting and distance events, we have the potential to do well and we're excited to prove ourselves."

1998 Highlights: Freshman Johan Nystrom is ranked fifth in the WAC in the 100 and 50 freestyle. He qualified with an NCAA B standard time in the 200 free against Brigham Young. Against Arizona State, Nystrom won the 100 free (45.95) and was fifth in the 100 (46.54) and 21st in the 50 (21.38) at the Speedo Cup. Nystrom boasts 12 wins and five second place finishes this season, he also holds Utah's season record in the 100 free. Prior to Utah: Nytrom was the 1997 Swedish champion in the 200 IM and was a World Cup finalist in the 100 IM. He was the Northern Swedish record holder in the 100 free and 200 IM in '96. Nystrom: "Personally, I want to make NCAA cuts and I would really like to win the 200 freestyle. Our team has really good 400 free and medley relay teams and I think we are capable of winning."
