Gymnastics Team Breezes Past No. 7 Stanford

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah opened its season with a bang, posting the second highest opening meet score in school history and trouncing No. 7 ranked Stanford 196.050-192.575 before a noisy crowd of 10,174 in Salt Lake City. Led by the best all-around freshman debut in Utah history, the Utes swept the first three places in the all-around. Freshman Theresa Kulikowski, a former U.S. National Team member, scored a 39.400 to win the all-around, breaking former Ute Traci Sommer's record of 39.325 set in 1995. Sophomore Theresa Wolf was runner-up in the win over Stanford with a 39.125, followed by senior Angie Leonard (39.075).
Kulikowski stole the show in a night of great performances. In addition to the all-around, she won bars (9.90), beam (9.85) and floor (9.925). She wasn't the only freshman to star. Deidra Graham placed second behind Kulikowski on both bars (9.85) and floor (9.90). A Ute won every event except vault, which was won by Stanford's Jenny Wilson (9.825).
The Utes hit 23 of 24 routines in their first competition, with only a miss on beam marring a perfect night. But Denise Jones, who fell on her mount, was magnificent on the other three events, scoring a 9.80 on vault, 9.70 on bars and 9.85 on floor. Leonard checked in with her 16th career all-around score.
